Steps to Completing the Volunteer Transportation Manager Program

Candidates can become a Certified Volunteer Transportation Manager by:

  • Completing the 46 credit hours of required coursework
  • Completing the required Advanced Learning mini-courses; Evaluation, Sustainability, and Leadership (12 credit hours)
  • Completing 2 hours of electives on a topic related to Volunteer Transportation Management
  • Completing final exam
  • Completing the coursework within 2 years of initial registration

 

Step 1: Foundation Courses (46 total hours): 

Starting Your Volunteer Transportation Program (12 credit hours)

  • Introduction to Volunteer Transportation
  • Advocating for Your Program
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration
  • Volunteer Recruitment and Retention

Developing High Quality Volunteers (12 credit hours)

  • Developing Your Training Program
  • Interacting with Passengers
  • Ethics and Boundaries
  • Safety and Emergency Management

Laying the Foundation for Your Daily Operations (12 credit hours)

  • Policy Development
  • The Volunteer/Rider Relationship
  • Program Models

Putting the Wheels on the Road (10 credit hours)

  • Fleet Management
  • Day to Day Operations and Management
  • Marketing Your Service

Step 2: Advanced Learning Mini-Courses (12 total hours):

  • Program Evaluation
  • Program Sustainability
  • Principles of Effective Leadership

Step 3: Elective Courses (2 total hours):
Elective hours/coursework must be on volunteer transportation management related topics and may be taken through ESPA or another organization. Candidates must submit documentation of the training + hours earned.

**Foundation Courses and Advanced Level Mini-Courses are provided by Easterseals Project Action. Elective hours may be taken through Easterseals or other organizations. Additional registration fees may apply for electives and are not included in the registration for the CVTM program.

Step 4: Final Exam (online)

Official notification will be provided by ESPA indicating successful completion of the coursework and final exam and an official certificate will be issued. Certified Volunteer Transportation Managers will be able to display the CVTM logo to their signature line or added to their program materials.
