Elements of a Travel Training Program

Travel Training: Determining Student Competency addresses skills trainees should have prior to beginning a travel training program or working with a travel trainer.  Participants will learn how to use the assessment process and other respectful methods to collect information in order to develop an understanding of a trainee’s baseline skills.  Travel trainers must first determine baseline competency information and then  develop a travel instruction plan to help the trainee work toward his/her independent travel goals.  This webinar will address the methods by which a trainer can accomplish these tasks.

Have you ever wondered how many companions are allowed to ride with a complementary paratransit eligible passenger?  Or how much assistance a bus operator is required to provide to a passenger with a disability in boarding the bus? Or how many service animals a person with a disability can bring on a fixed route bus?  If you have had these question or other ADA related questions accessible transportation, then this workshop is for you.

This 1.5 day, in-person workshop will cover regulatory requirements for fixed-route, ADA complementary paratransit, and demand responsive transportation.  Instructors will also distinguish between what is a regulatory requirement and what are best practices in customer service.

Implementing Conditional Eligibility for ADA Complementary Paratransit Trip-by-Trip

Implementing Conditional Eligibility for ADA Complementary Paratransit will address how to schedule trips based on a person’s conditional eligibility for ADA Complementary Paratransit. Once the determination has been made that a person can ride fixed-route transit for some, but not all, of his/her trips and conditions are placed on his eligibility to take ADA Complementary Paratransit, then the complex process of implementing these eligibility conditions begins. Topics in this session will include tracking riders’ conditions analyzing individual trips, determining eligibility for conditions that regularly change (i.e. weather-related occurrences) and best practices in implementing conditional eligibility.

Introduction to Travel Training is an intensive three-day workshop with classroom and field instruction. The workshop offers an environment where travel trainers will acquire knowledge in the classroom and in the field, obtaining constructive feedback from trainers and colleagues. Travel trainers will receive a workbook and access to a collection of useful electronic resources ready to use when they return to work.

The workshop consists of ten modules and covers strategies for training on rail systems and in rural communities in addition to the traditional fixed-route bus material.  It also covers the role of travel trainers and ADA complementary paratransit service, ADA rights and responsibilities and the process of assessing ongoing progress throughout training.

This course starts with an overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act and public transportation and how this important piece of federal legislation connects with travel training, followed by information about building a good working relationship with local transportation providers. The remaining two modules explore connections across similar professions such as mobility management and ADA complementary paratransit eligibility programs.
