Or how much assistance you as a bus driver are required to provide passengers with disabilities? Or the requirements under the ADA on level rail boarding? This session will provide answers to these questions and others that are frequently received by Easterseals Project Action Consulting on transportation and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Modes of transportation covered will be fixed-route bus transportation, paratransit, and rail.

ADA Complementary Paratransit: Responding to Emergencies will address considerations to be made when the paratransit preparedness plan must be put into action.  Topics will include coordinating with other agencies; methods of communication; emergency communication; locating and assisting people with disabilities; what to do with pets and service animals and other considerations. Connection information and the webinar presentation will be emailed to registered participants the day before the webinar. Participation can be achieved by connecting to the webinar room or by connecting by phone and following along with the emailed presentation. This webinar will address topics such as competencies for all types of transit personnel and the essential practice of maintaining an excellent workforce through effective hiring, training, and monitoring performance.  Real-life scenarios will be used to teach participants how to handle difficult employees and workplace conflict; tips for successful integration of new employees; how to retain and reward excellent employees; and effective policies and procedures for staying out of court.

Travel Training Assessments: Determining Student Competency Webinar

Travel Training: Determining Student Competency addresses skills trainees should have prior to beginning a travel training program or working with a travel trainer.  Participants will learn how to use the assessment process and other respectful methods to collect information in order to develop an understanding of a trainee’s baseline skills.  Travel trainers must first determine baseline competency information and then  develop a travel instruction plan to help the trainee work toward his/her independent travel goals.  This webinar will address the methods by which a trainer can accomplish these tasks. Connection information and the webinar presentation will be emailed to registered participants the day before the webinar. Introduction to Travel Training Workshop – Tampa, FL @ Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority: Operations Center

Introduction to Travel Training is an intensive three-day workshop with classroom and field instruction. The workshop offers an environment where travel trainers will acquire knowledge in the classroom and in the field, obtaining constructive feedback from trainers and colleagues. Travel trainers will receive a workbook and access to a collection of useful electronic resources ready to use when they return to work. The workshop consists of ten modules and covers strategies for training on rail systems and in rural communities in addition to the traditional fixed-route bus material.  It also covers the role of travel trainers and ADA complementary paratransit service, ADA rights and responsibilities and the process of assessing ongoing progress throughout training.

Registration each day begins at 8:00 a.m. with the workshop beginning promptly at 8:30 a.m.  The workshop ends at 4:30 p.m. on days 1 and 2 and at at 3:00 p.m. on day 3.  Please plan to stay until the end of day 3 when planning your travel.  There is not a pre-determined workshop hotel.  Select your own lodging, but please consider your commute time when choosing.  All meals, refreshments, and travel costs are the responsibility of the participant with the exception of coffee and bottled water which will be provided.   There is no dress code for the workshop.  Please dress comfortably. Outdoor activities will occur rain or shine.

Advanced Travel Training Strategies Workshop – Tampa, FL @ HART

This 1.5 day, in-person workshop will cover advanced travel trainer strategies including working with trainees with psychiatric disabilities and other less common disabilities, behavioral strategies and techniques from a trainer perspective, using physical strategies safely, advanced street crossing techniques, and more.  Also covered are any updated or current requirements for bus operators for assisting people with disabilities in accessing public transportation.
